Motorcycle battery chargers: when and how to charge them
A motorcycle that remains unused for more than 2-3 weeks loses 20-30% of the battery charge due to natural self-discharge, especially in winter with AGM or gel batteries. An intelligent charger with maintenance function detects the battery status and keeps it at 100% without overcharging. Essential if you store the motorcycle in a cold garage or use it only on weekends.

Types of chargers according to your battery
For batteries conventional lead-acid or AGM for motorcycle (12 V, 6-20 Ah) a 0.8-2 A multi-stage charger is sufficient. For lithium (LiFePO4) essential specific charger with voltage profile 14,4 V / constant current (NOCO Genius2 automatically detects lithium; BS Battery LFP). Generic car chargers 12 V / 10 A may damage small motorcycle battery: always use 0,8-2 A for batteries <15 Ah.
How to connect correctly
- Switch off the ignition and disconnect the negative (-) cable from the battery.
- Connect the red cable of the charger to the positive (+) terminal of the battery.
- Connect the black charger lead to the negative (-) terminal.
- Plug the charger into 230 V. Select mode (auto recommended).
- Disconnect the black first, then the red when you are finished.
Permanent lubricant
If you leave the motorcycle parked all winter, connect a float function charger (like NOCO Genius or Battery Tender) for weeks or months without risk of overcharging. Compliant with ECE R10 and IEC 61851 standards for lead-acid battery chargers.
