Rims

bicycle rims

A set of bicycle tires is considered an essential component for any type of bicycle, whether it is mountain, road, electric or hybrid. Tires are an element that can be easily interchangeable, as well as being an important spare part to keep your bike up to date.

It is important to note that bicycle tires have two main functions, steering and traction. Steering is provided by the front tire, while traction is provided by the rear tire. Hence the importance of using a specific type of tire depending on the type of terrain and driving.

What to take into account when buying your bicycle tires?

Choosing a good bicycle tire is essential for the life of the bicycle and its quality.

Here are some factors that are important to consider before buying a bicycle tire:

- The width of the bicycle rims

The width of the tires will depend on the use that is going to be given to the bicycle, since the wider the rim, the greater the contact surface with the ground, so the inches of the bike''s tires will be larger.

Generally, MTB bikes have 2-inch wheels, while road bikes range from 1 to 1.5 inches.

- The shape of bicycle rims

If the rim is completely smooth or has small drainage grooves, it will be a slick bicycle rim. If, on the contrary, the rims contain abundant grooves, it will be called semi-slick.

The distribution of the studs must also be considered, since it affects the grip of the tires on the ground: The smoother the tire, the less grip it will have..

- inflation pressure

Another factor to consider is the amount of air that can be introduced into the bicycle tires: The higher the tire pressure, the less friction the tire will have..

However, not all tires can withstand the same filling pressure, so you must follow the manufacturer''s instructions (both the maximum and minimum pressure will be indicated on the side of the tire).

- The hardness of the rubber

It is also important to consider the type of rubber the tire is made of, as it will give it greater or lesser hardness.

Types of bicycle tires

The types of bicycle tires will vary according to the use that is going to be given to it, among the main ones we will find:

- Road bike tires

road bike tires They allow better rolling, greater safety, greater rigidity, lightness and a better use of force applied by the cyclist in each pedal stroke, thanks to the fact that they have a better inertia of the hubs.

- Mountain bike tires

Mountain bike tires provide a greater comfort and safety in more rustic terrain, and are visually coarser.

The reason for that is that they provide more grip, however, at the cost of more weight. It should be noted that they have greater rolling resistance, because their tires are thicker, safer and more stable for the most demanding terrain.

Because of that they are wider, absorb and grip more firmly to the irregularities of the ground.

- Rims for electric bicycle

An electric bicycle tire is designed to support the greater power and weight of this type of bicycle, so these tires they are much more solid and resistant compared to the rest.

Tubeless bicycle rims: tubeless

Tubeless bike tires are a technology that have long dominated the mountains and cyclocross, but have now been incorporated into the world of road bike tires as a very viable alternative. As you can guess from its name, this type of rims do not use tiresThey prefer to opt for a tighter fit with the rim to trap air inside the tire.

A noteworthy feature of these rims is that are more resistant to punctures, plus they provide greater bearing strength compared to the others, being able to function properly with less air pressure, thus favoring grip on the ground, control and comfort.
