Trailer braking: AL-KO, KNOTT, BPW, PEITZ

The inertia braking system (push braking) is the standard system in light and medium trailers up to 3,500 kg in Europe, in accordance with ECE R13 Regulation and EU Regulation 858/2018 on type-approval. It works by utilizing the trailer's inertia when braking the towing vehicle: the tow bar retracts and activates the brake cylinder. When to replace brake pads and shoes

The linings should be replaced when the lining thickness is less than 1.5 mm or when vibrations occur while braking. Typical lifespan 60,000-80,000 km for sporadic use in trailers, 30,000-50,000 km for intensive use (professional transport). Inspect annually during ITV or when maintaining the bearing. If you drive with a loaded trailer, avoid engine braking on long descents: the trailer tends to push and wears out the linings quickly.

Maintenance and adjustment of inertia brakes

The brake cable (Bowden) tends to stretch with use. Check the tension annually: the trailer handbrake lever should have a travel of 60-80 mm; if it is greater, adjust the cables and drums. Lubricate the inertia head and Bowden cable every 5,000 km. In accordance with EU Regulation 661/2009 (braking systems for vehicles) and ECE R13.
