CARGO RESTRAINTS
Load securing: straps, tie downs, nets, and cargo boxes
Spanish regulations (General Traffic Regulations, Article 14) require securing the vehicle load in such a way that it does not fall, move, compromise stability, or generate excessive noise. Fine up to 200 € for non-compliance + removal of load if it creates danger. European standard EN 12195 establishes the minimum tension force for a standard tie-down strap (250 daN STF, 1.000 daN LC).

Mounting types
Tie-down strap with ratchet25 mm 800 kg LC, 35 mm 1.500 kg LC, 50 mm 2.500-5.000 kg LC. For securing interior trunk cargo or on roof rack. Elastic cords (octopus): fast, under limited tension, only light loads up to 20 kg. Elastic bandcovers the entire rack, prevents loose objects. Clamps and hooks: complement the hard points fixing tapes for the car.
How many tapes do you need
General rule EN 12195-1: load capacity 100 kg = minimum 2 straps in X. Load 500 kg = 4 straps. Bulky load with risk of overturning (furniture, washing machine) = minimum 4 straps + lateral locking. Always check the maximum weight on the rooftop that your car can carry in the manual: typically 50-75 kg in SUV, 50 kg in compact.
Rear bike and ski carrier
A bike carrier with tow ball mount fits 2-4 bikes (total 40-60 kg). Check your tow ball capacity and D rating (typically 6-10 kN). Heavy e-bikes (25 kg) require a carrier approved for 80 kg total. Compliant with EU Regulation 1230/2012 (motor vehicles + trailers).
