Windshield wiper blades are active safety components: poor visibility due to rain or dirt multiplies the risk of accidents by 3. Types of wiper blades and differences
Conventional (frame): metal rod skeleton with rubber. Cheaper option. Lifespan 8-12 months. Aero blade: without armor, low profile. Improved high-speed sweeping, lifespan 12-18 months. Hybrid: combines the two systems, balances performance and price. Your car originally had a specific type; respect the exact front length (40-75 cm) and rear length (25-40 cm).
How to choose the correct wiper blade
- Measure the current wiper blade from end to end in mm or cm.
- Identify the type of connector: U-hook, side, push-button, bayonet. Example: VW Golf 7 uses specific push-button.
- Check if your car is side-pin (asymmetric): driver 600mm, passenger 450mm is usual.
- The rear wiper is usually different: SUV 350mm, compact 300mm, minivan 400mm.
Maintenance
Clean the wipers with a microfiber cloth and soapy water every 2 months. A dusty or resin-covered rubber blade wipes worse. Do not use them dry (they wear out instantly). In frosty areas, detach the wipers from the glass before starting the engine. Technical data compliant with ECE R43 (windshield) and SAE J903 standards.
