Engine oils: which viscosity to use
The correct viscosity depends on the manufacturer (consult maintenance manual) and ambient temperature. The most common modern standards:
- 0W20 / 0W30: modern engines efficiency (Toyota hybrids, BMW B-series, Ford EcoBoost)
- 5W30: the most common. Fits VW 504.00 / 507.00, MB 229.51, BMW Longlife-04.
- 5W40: diesel engines without particle filters or with high mileage.
- 10W40 semi-synthetic: old engines without modern technology
Basic maintenance frequency
- Engine oil + filter: every 15,000-30,000 km or annually (whichever comes first).
- Air filter: every 30,000 km in normal use, every 15,000 km city/dust.
- Air filter (pollen): annual.
- Brake fluid: every 2 years due to hygroscopicity.
- Front brake pads: 30,000-50,000 km depending on use.
- Spark plugs: standard 30,000 km, iridium/platinum 60,000-100,000 km.
