Trailer plugs and connectors: 7 and 13 pins

The electrical connector is the part that links the tractor vehicle's electricity with the trailer (brake lights, position lights, turn signals, reverse light). There are two European standards: 7 polos (ISO 1724, type N) the classic, and 13 poles (ISO 11446) modern with additional lines for caravan fridge, permanent position and 12V control. Compliant with EU Regulation 661/2009 and ECE R48 standard.

7 vs 13 polos: which do you need?

7 polos: basic lighting only (blinkers, brake, position, reverse, ground). Sufficient for bike carrier and cargo trailer without fridge. 13 polosadd pin 9 (12 V permanent for caravan fridge), pin 10 (12 V after ignition), pin 11 (fridge negative) + pin 13 (permanent negative). Essential for caravan, motorhome, trailers with internal lights.

CAN-bus installation in modern cars

Vehicles from 2010 onwards with CAN-bus controlled electronics (BMW, Audi, Mercedes, VW, Volvo) require dedicated CAN-BUS module type Jaeger 21550522, 21500548 or equivalent Aspöck/Westfalia. Without this module, the car detects phantom current and displays an error on the frame or disables ESP when you connect the trailer. Cars prior to 2008 support direct wiring.

Post-installation check

Connect the trailer, ask another person to press left/right turn signal, brake, reverse, position lights and rear fog lights. Verify that all Respond correctly from the trailer. Measurements: 12 V at pin 9 (13P) with engine running. Ground resistance <1 ohm. Data conform ISO 1724, ISO 11446 and ISO 12098 (commercial heavy).
