Condenser units are used in addition to ignition coils as an additional battery ignition ignition system. They are specially designed for powerful engines that require a powerful spark. This ensures that the fuel mixture in the cylinder always ignites at the right time. Capacitors are more suitable for this process than ignition coils.

The ignition coil only acts as a transformer because the capacitor supplies the primary circuit with a very high voltage (approximately 400V).

A so-called thyristor (semiconductor device) takes over in said "process" the charging and discharging of the capacitor energy storage device. Current can only flow if the positive pole is on the anode and the negative pole is on the cathode. The passage of electricity is possible thanks to the "door".

The necessary "gate impulse" can, for example, be supplied by a switch contact. Once the thyristor has been ignited, the voltage stored in the capacitor is discharged through the primary side of the ignition coil; the current decreases and the flow of current is blocked by the semiconductor.

Meanwhile, the winding of the ignition coil, which is crossed by the current, induces a high voltage surge inside the secondary winding. This then jumps as a spark across the spark plug electrodes.
