If the factory installed OEM radio is to be replaced by an aftermarket radio in a CAN bus controlled vehicle, a specific CAN bus adapter is required.

Specific and universal CAN bus adapters convert the relevant digital data from the vehicle-specific data bus into analog signals.

Depending on the adapter, various signals or convenience functions such as ignition plus, lighting, reversing signal or even a speed signal are read out and made available in analogue form for various retrofit solutions.
