To secure the breakaway cable as required by law
Note for the Netherlands and Switzerland:
The legal regulations of the Netherlands and Switzerland provide for special safety devices for braked and unbraked trailers.
According to this, trailers with a gross vehicle weight of 750 kg or more need a "breakout device" that prevents the trailer from becoming independent if separated from the towing vehicle. The rope must be permanently attached to the trailer and must not be excessively deformed or damaged.
s a. If there is no eyelet on the trailer coupling to connect the breakaway cable, a bracket must be fitted. This is attached to the trailer coupling, to which the safety rope must be attached.
It is not enough if the lanyard is loosely attached to the trailer coupling.
This regulation also applies to unbraked trailers up to 750 kg gross weight. These must be secured with a safety chain on the tow vehicle.
