BEARINGS
motorcycle bearings
motorcycle bearings are small circular pieces that are installed on the axles of the wheels so that the vehicle maintains stability. Inside them they have small balls that give them greater rigidity and allow the wheel not to become unbalanced.
The function of the bearings is vital for driving a motorcycle and it is best to always keep them in good condition. The problem is that these parts gradually wear out and we may not realize they are damaged until it is too late.
The best way to find out if motorbike bearings are worn, either due to humidity or dust, is by putting the bike on a stand and trying to tilt the wheel. If you perceive the slightest deviation, it may be an indication that the bearings need to be changed as soon as possible.
What are motorcycle bearings used for?
Bearings are extremely important parts for a motorcycle, since They allow the wheels to remain firm when driving and not drift. Its function is so fundamental that, if it fails, it could even cause an accident.
That is why, every time you service your motorcycle, you should take a moment to check that the bearings, both front and rear, are in good condition.
Types of motorcycle bearings
Among the different types of bearings for motorcycles, there are:
- Ball bearings
These are the most used, within them there are at least four subtypes: angular contact thrust ball bearings, deep groove ball bearings, self-aligning ball bearings and high-speed angular contact ball bearings. The latter are used in competitions; They have, as their name suggests, an outer ring and an inner ring, including the balls, the cage and the separator to increase contact and thus increase resistance to the transmission of higher loads. Therefore, they are more stable.
- Needle roller bearings
Needle roller bearings consist of long, thin cylindrical rollers. are indicated when there is a limitation of the radial space and a larger contact surface is needed on the axial axis, that is, along. That is why they have that cylindrical shape and inside they have needles arranged axially, to maximize the contact surface.
- roller bearings
In this case, they are solid outer and inner rings with a series of caged cylindrical rollers. The cage prevents the rollers from coming into direct contact with each other and allows a larger contact surface and less slippage, avoiding unnecessary friction and resisting more the rapid acceleration of the vehicle that carries them. Unlike ball bearings, they have a line of contact and not points of contact, making them even more stable.
- Axial bearings
Finally, the bearings they are used to support pure axial loads and not radial loads. This means that they are not compatible with all types of vehicles, since they deteriorate faster with radial loads, which is why they are not as widespread in the commercial area.

How to change the bearings of a motorcycle?
To remove the bearings from your motorcycle you need tools like a hammer, screwdrivers, pliers, a long screw and a strong plate to remove the bearing from its place.
In addition, you should consider the following indications:
1. Remove the wheel
The first step is to remove the wheel, since it is necessary to be able to remove the outer metal bushings.
2. Apply heat
The next is apply heat with a paint stripper gun, so that the aluminum of the hub heats up around the seal and it expands more easily. It should not be heated too much, but only remove the cold so that it is easier to remove the bearing.
3. Take out the bearing retainer
Next, remove the bearing retainer. To do this, you have to pry with the screwdriver or with the plate or screw that you have found. You must rest the blade of the screwdriver on a plastic sheet so as not to scratch the hub.
4. Remove circlip
You should remove circlip, a malleable locking washer that contains a specific bushing groove. Press it down with pliers and remove it with the screwdriver.
5. Remove the old bearing
With the punch, a large screw that is used as a point and support, and a hammer, you will have to hit from the opposite side to finally remove the bearing, but not before making several passes with the heat gun to dilate the bushing and make it come out more easily.
6. Support the plunger on the edge of the bearing
The plunger should rest just on the edge of the bearing in its inner part. To get it out, you have to hit hard.
7. Install the new bearing
We now turn to install the new bearing, we insinuate it on its place and with soft blows of the hammer we are inserting it in its housing. The second one is placed on top of the bearing and it is finished taking its place in the same way. Remember to use heat before mounting the bearing to expand the hub.
8. Place the circlip and the retainer
Finally, the circlip and retainer are placed to prevent it from coming out of place, you can add a little fixing liquid beforehand to make it much better.
